Auckland, 10 November 2025 – HP New Zealand has become the first IT brand to earn the Eco Choice Aotearoa (ECA) and TCO Certified dual certification, setting a new benchmark for sustainable IT products in New Zealand.
The partnership between Eco Choice Aotearoa and TCO Certified is a global first, designed to harmonise standards irrespective of borders, and reduce confusion in the marketplace. Through the affiliate programme, Eco Choice Aotearoa and TCO Development mutually recognise each other’s certifications as reflecting international best practices in sustainability.
“The need for sustainable IT products has never been more urgent, with Kiwis currently generating 10-15 kgs of e-waste per person annually, and only around 25% of that is being recycled,” says Laura Gemmell, Chief Executive Officer at Eco Choice Aotearoa.
“With this partnership with TCO Certified, we’re excited to make it easier for both procurers and individual consumers in New Zealand to make responsible purchasing decisions, as products bearing ECA and TCO Certified’s dual certification meet stringent criteria on durability, repairability, product stewardship, and responsible sourcing.
“Congratulations to HP New Zealand for being a true sustainability leader, understanding that both global and local action are essential to making a meaningful impact.”
Recognised standards lift the bar
The new dual recognition brings HP’s global sustainability commitments into a locally trusted framework that make responsible procurement simpler for New Zealand businesses and consumers.
“Kiwis want credible, easy to understand signals that a device will last longer, use fewer resources and comes from a responsible supply chain. HP products have long held TCO Certified, and building on this foundation with the addition of a locally respected ecolabel helps support our customers as we collectively shift towards a circular, low-carbon future,” says Shannon Harris, Managing Director of HP New Zealand.
HP products covered by the dual certification include a wide range of display monitors, all-in-one-PCs, desktops, notebooks and laptops, and Poly headsets.
Collaborating for broader outcomes
The ECA and TCO Certified partnership breaks new ground, aligning a New Zealand pioneering ecolabel with the leading international sustainability certification for IT products, resulting in clearer, consistent signals for buyers.
“Partnering with ECA through dual certification allows IT buyers in New Zealand to request more sustainable computers and other devices, with the assurance that products and their supply chains have undergone rigorous third-party verification,” says Clare Hobby, Director of External Engagement at TCO Development.
Eco Choice Aotearoa and TCO Development are both members of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN), in accordance with ISO 14024 , type 1, and are independent from industry.
To qualify, IT brands must meet Eco Choice Aotearoa’s local requirements and uphold its values statement, which includes a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
“Eco Choice Aotearoa and TCO Development invite businesses purchasing IT in Australia and New Zealand to unlock the advantages of dual certification and enhance their sustainability impact,” adds Hobby.
