Sustainability is integrated into Essity’s strategy and is a priority for long-term profitable growth. Essity is committed to reducing environmental impact by decarbonizing our business and maintaining healthy ecosystems while contributing to a circular, healthier and more inclusive society.
Essity’s Kawarau site in New Zealand is a global leader in sustainable tissue manufacturing. In 2010, steam made in gas fired boilers was replaced with naturally occurring geothermal steam purchased from the local Iwi reducing site carbon emissions by 37%. In late 2024, another significant carbon reduction will be delivered by replacing gas hood drying with geothermal steam on one of our paper machines creating the only tissue machine in the world using full geothermal steam drying. Our sourcing of geothermal steam not only reduces our emissions, it also supports the local Kawerau and Bay of Plenty communities.
As well as reducing emissions, fibre sourcing is a material consideration for absorbent hygiene products and sourcing fiber the right way is a critical step in minimising the impact our products have on the planet. Essity Australasia’s Eco Choice accredited products are made from 100% responsibly sourced FSC® certified fiber.
